In the Muslim religion, the idea of halal (forbidden) means to be permissible to use. It is also a cultural concept in which Islam states certain items are permissible for Muslims to purchase, and others are just not (i.e. they are forbidden). Therefore, when it comes to non-halal products, like clothing, food, and cosmetics like nail polish, halal products have to fulfill two very important conditions: they have to be permissible for Muslims, and they have to be halal for non-Muslims. In other words, there is no 'gray area' when it comes to halal.

To illustrate, take the halal nail polish discussed above. The polish contains a sunscreen that has been approved by the FDA and is therefore permissible to sell, provided that you don't breathe in any of the fumes emitted during application or ingest any of the dust from the finished product. You wouldn't inhale or ingest anything that was emitting air pollution, so obviously you wouldn't inhale or ingest the fumes from the sunscreen. Halal beauty products, such as halal nail polish, are similar. Just because a product is called 'halal' doesn't mean that it meets all the requirements of being permitted for Muslim use. There may be other factors involved, depending on the country of manufacture. For example, some types of makeup may not be deemed appropriate for international travel; another might require an extra ingredient to be added to the product to make it suitable for the African or Asian cultures; still others may only be allowed in countries that permit tattooing.

As mentioned earlier, natural oils are a key factor in how effective and safe halal nail polish is. When the oil-water mixture cools quickly after application, it is considered safe. The same holds true for alcohol-based gels. The longer the cooling time, the safer they are for your nails. If you prefer a long-lasting application time, however, you would be better off with gels or even oil-based acrylics, as they offer longer protection against damage caused by heat.

There are several brands available for the breathable nail polish we've reviewed. Each offers its own benefits and challenges. Two, we particularly recommend are Orly and Essie, which have been around for many years and have developed a solid reputation based on high quality and excellent customer service. While Orly does have one of the most impressive ranges of acrylics for nails, they are not the only brand to consider. Vegan nail polish has several great options for the breathable polish fan.

Halal Certification is vital when considering any type of cosmetic product. Though it may seem odd to some, there is a certain degree of spirituality to beauty products with a halal certification - even if the ingredients aren't particularly religious in nature. Products with halal certification not only have been subjected to rigorous scientific research, but they are also produced with an appropriate concentration of all natural ingredients. That is why you should always make sure the halal certification on an item says it is "cultured with ISLAMIC" rather than "synthetic."
